Frequently Asked Questions

What is the BMW EWS system?

EWS stands for Elektronische Wegfahrsperre (Electronic Immobilizer). It’s BMW’s anti-theft system that prevents the engine from starting without a matched key, immobilizer module, and ECU.

Which vehicles have EWS?

EWS is found in many BMWs and MINIs from the mid-90s through the early 2000s, including:

  • BMW E36, E38, E39, E46, E53, E60, E85

  • MINI R50, R52, R53

What issues can EWS cause?

  • Lost/damaged keys

  • Failed EWS module

  • ECU/EWS mismatch (especially after swaps)

  • “Crank but no start” conditions

  • Difficulties with tuning or using spare ECUs

What is an EWS delete?

An EWS delete removes the immobilizer function from the ECU, allowing the engine to start without the original matched key or module. It’s a software reprogramming solution that disables EWS checks.

Why delete EWS?

  • Engine Swaps – No EWS alignment needed

  • Race/Track Builds – Simplifies setup

  • Troubleshooting – Eliminate common no-start issues

  • Simplified Wiring – Great for standalone setups

Is EWS delete safe?

EWS delete removes one factory theft protection layer. For many use cases—track cars, off-road builds, swaps—it’s not needed. Additional security options like fuel kill switches, alarms, or GPS tracking can be installed.

What do I need to delete EWS?

We offer:

  • Pre-deleted ECUs (MS43, MS45, MS45.1, EMS2000)

  • Bench harness kits with INPA-compatible cables

  • EWS delete tuning services for your existing ECU

Will My key fob still lock/unlock the doors?

Yes — Your key fob willcontinue to function normally.

Do I need to remove the EWS module?

Yes. We include a module that deletes the EWS Module providing a true plug and play system and deleting the EWS system entirely.
